Mon District, covering an area of 1,786 sq. km, lies in the eastern part of Nagaland, bordering Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Myanmar. The district headquarters is situated at an altitude of 897.64 metres above sea level. Predominantly hilly, Mon is characterised by steep slopes, undulating foothills, and the Naga Hills and Patkai ranges. Veta (Shahwot), the district’s highest peak, rises to 2,413 metres.
Mon has a moderate climate, with warm days and cool nights. The rainy season extends from May to October, with annual rainfall ranging between 2,000–3,000 mm. Agriculture is the main occupation, engaging nearly 90% of the workforce. The district has significant potential for economic development through its forest, water, and human resources, as well as tea cultivation, horticulture, and other cash crops. With improved infrastructure, modern farming techniques, technical knowledge, and investment, Mon has considerable scope for generating employment and promoting sustainable economic growth.
